Illinois Funding Announcement

June 7th, 2016

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As you probably know by now, the impasse at the Capitol continues as legislators and the Governor were unable to reach agreement on a budget. In the coming days you will hear a great deal of speculation pertaining to whether schools will open in the fall.

Without a state appropriation for K-12 education for the 2016-2017 school year, many school districts will face dire circumstances. For Massac County Unit 1, State funding comprises nearly half of the revenue for the Education Fund and about two thirds of revenue for the Transportation Fund.

Unit 1 has fund reserves that could allow the opening of school and sustain the district through a few months. At this point the Board of Education is reluctant to spend those reserves as there is no guarantee they will be made up whenever the state begins to resume payments.

Those types of decisions will become critical for Southern Illinois and the entire State if there is no budget by August 1st. We are trying to remain optimistic there will be a compromise in Springfield.

Feel free to email me with your comments at dsmith@massac.org.
